The New York Police Department is facing mounting criticism for its harsh and ineffective response to the surge in homelessness that began with the deadly riots of the 1970s.
The department, which has since been reformed and renamed the Police Department of New York, is also the most violent force in the city, and a hotbed of violent crime.
As of August 31, more than 1,600 people have been killed by police, and nearly half of those have been minorities.
It’s not just the department’s officers who are targets for violence, however.
Across the city of the same name, more people have lost their lives to guns than by police in the last decade.
“It’s not fair to compare the NYPD to the LAPD, and it’s not true,” says Joe D’Alessandro, a veteran journalist who has covered the city since 1972.
“There’s a lot of people who have been unfairly targeted by the NYPD, and there are many who are under the microscope by the city.”
As part of a public-private partnership, the New Yorker and its sister publication The New Yorker are launching a series of investigations that will investigate the role the NYPD plays in the rising violence.
As part to the series, NBC News will be working with the New Yorkers to identify people and events whose deaths were not immediately identified.
The stories will be based on data collected by The New Yorkers’ database, and will include interviews with police officers and eyewitnesses.
As the story is published, NBC will continue to follow up on the cases as they unfold.
New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill spoke to reporters in front of the police station in Times Square, New York on Thursday, August 31.
The NYPD is facing increasing pressure to reform, and the public is beginning to question how long the department can continue to function as it is.
“I don’t think that this is the last thing that people are going to see from the New City Police,” said O’Donnell, a former federal prosecutor.
“We will keep trying to do our best to reform and keep doing what we’re doing to get the city back on track, but we will not get there overnight.”
NBC News spoke with former NYPD Officer Kevin McCaffrey, who was shot and killed by a white police officer on Aug. 29, 2017, on the streets of Brooklyn, and retired NYPD Chief of Detectives Raymond Kelly about the challenges of policing the city.
He also spoke with several members of the community who said the department is not doing enough to help the homeless.
“If the NYPD is the most dangerous force in America, then we should be fighting the most aggressive and violent people,” McCaffery said.
“That’s the reality.
We can’t just let that go.
We need to get on top of it.”
The New England Patriots are also at the forefront of the fight against homelessness.
A week before his team’s Super Bowl victory over the Houston Texans, former NFL player Steve Gronkowski posted a video to Instagram of himself sleeping in the cold with his dogs, the Fins.
“When I first got to New York in ’73, there were no shelters,” Gronkowski said in the video.
“You could go into a shelter, but it was just a dump.”
Today, New Yorkers have a number of options for sheltering their pets and living on the street.
According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, there are at least 100 shelters available across the city with an estimated 400,000 beds in need.
But many people simply don’t have the money to pay for a shelter.
Some of the shelters have been shut down, with the city saying that homeless shelters can be costly and not a good use of resources.
The Homeless Coalition, which supports the homeless, also criticized the NYPD for its treatment of the homeless and its response to recent riots.
“The NYPD’s actions during the recent unrest in New York have been shameful, and I’m not going to rest until we see justice and accountability for these murders,” said Robert Williams, the organization’s executive director.
“The Police Department and other local governments are not doing anything to stop the growing epidemic of homelessness,” said D’Angelo, who said that he had seen many people with the same stories in his reporting on the city’s police.
“People in New Jersey and across the country have been waiting years for change.
The New City is the model, but in the short term, it is the worst model of government in the country.”
A new law was passed by the New Jersey legislature last month, but Gov.
Chris Christie has been slow to sign it into law, and he’s also criticized police departments for not properly training officers about the need to respond to crime.
In his first budget proposal, Christie proposed eliminating $1 billion in federal funds over the next four years to help fund shelters.
That funding would be distributed over the following three years, with $150 million in federal money to be distributed to cities
